Almonds: The weightloss life-saver

Home / Nutrition / Almonds: The weightloss life-saver

Most people shy away from nuts when trying to lose weight…

But you really shouldn’t! Almonds got me through a year of focused weightloss, helping me stay on track and providing me with a go-to snack when the sugar monster reared its head. They’re top of my list when a Forge client asks ‘Grace, what can I grab when I really want a snack?’

Almonds are high in beneficial nutrients like Magnesium and Vitamin E, and most importantly they are rich in fatty acids like the Omega 9, Omega 6 and Omega 3. These essential fatty acids are healthy fats our body requires, and help in the prevention of cardio vascular diseases, by stabilising blood sugar levels and preventing bad cholesterol build up in our arteries.

Compare the monounsaturated fats found in Almonds to Saturated and Trans Fats (ewww) found in most processed foods, which lead to various cardio vascular diseases like blocked arteries and strokes.

Fibre

Almonds come packed with dietary fibre from their skin, which helps in proper digestion of the food and healthy bowel movement (yay). Studies have shown people who consume more fibre are more likely to have a healthy weight, and an ounce of plain almonds has 4g of fibre. If we eat Almonds with other high-fibre foods, we help boost their benefits. For example, add slivered almonds to your protein porridge in the morning, or a teaspoon of almond butter to your midday smoothie.

Snacks

As Almonds contain high amounts of monounsaturated fats, protein and fibre, they make you feel ‘full’, which helps prevent excessive food consumption as you feel fuller for longer. They are also pretty damn tasty, even in their raw state, and that sensation of chewing and crunching makes the brain send out endorphins (which make us happy), so we feel full and happy, that’s a win win!

Go Raw

Just make sure that you always go for raw and whole almonds, instead of the salted or processed ones, as they contain excessive salts which increases the sodium levels in the blood, as well as containing lots of sugar.

So next time you feel the sugar monster ready to pounce, grab 5 or 6 almonds and go to town. Now excuse me while I go grab a few from the cupboard hmm…
